For those of you that attended the pre-season meeting, there was a strong message from both Sir Thomas and Jonathan Corcoran for clubs to have up to date, named and trained Child Welfare Officers. Working closely with the Harrogate Cricket Development Group there is now the requirement for action from some clubs. A very strongly worded communication was sent our on April 19th entitled Child Welfare – Action Required
SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTING CHILDREN TRAINING COURSE FOR CLUB CHILD WELFARE OFFICERS.
As a cricket League we have been having a very concerted effort to ensure that all our member clubs have a qualified Child Welfare Officer.
There are a number of requirements needed for someone to become a Child Welfare Officer, listed below;
1. They need to attend a Safeguarding and Protecting Children Course, this is a three hour course and for the first course it needs to be an attended course, subsequent renewals (every three years) can be done online, and we can provide details on how to do this. This course is run by Sports Coach UK and is a general course for all sports based upon Child Welfare.
2. The Child Welfare Officer needs to attend a Safe Hands Course, again a three hour session, this is delivered by the County Welfare Team of the Yorkshire Cricket Board and is sport specific.
3. First Aid, there is a requirement for there to be a first aider at every club, this does not have to be the CWO but in the majority of cases it is, the development group will be arranging courses following the Safeguarding and the Safe Hands courses for clubs that want to send someone. These are a low cost course typically around £20 and are delivered locally.
