Week Seventeen – Results and Performances

It is still as you were in the race for the championship, with Ouseburn in pole position but with Birstwith and Darley still snapping at their heals.  It looks like its Ouseburn’s title but cricket is a funny old game…

It was a quick game at Ouseburn as the Division One leaders beat Pateley Bridge. Pateley were dismissed for just 79 in 28 overs with Russell Robshaw taking 4-40 and Chris Morrison 3-17. Nick Shirt top scored with 23. Ouseburn didn’t have it all there own way as Pateley went down fighting and taking 6 wickets in their innings. Chris Morrison (30) and Jamie Bryant (31*) put Ouseburn on the right track as the other batters failed for single digit scores. New Pateley signing Joe Preece from Knaresborough took 4-44. Ouseburn’s nearest challengers, Birstwith (253/4) got past West Tanfield but Adam Hodgkinson’s 101 and Andrew Ganderton’s 56 in the first wicket partnership of 117 was the building block for a Tanfield total of 250/7. 2 wickets apiece for Pete Hardisty (2-66) and Gorge Hirst (2-56) were the pick of the Birstwith bowlers. Birstwith top two were both run out with the visitors reeling at 24/2 but Craig Robinson (56) Jim Riley (75) and Craig Armitage (47*) saw them home in the 38th over. Darley welcomed Alne and had Chris Gill to thank for a dominant display of firepower at the top of the order. 214* including 8 boundaries and 22 maximums in just 122 balls set the tone for the afternoon and a huge total of 344/4. Alne lost regular wickets with only Paul Hutchinson (30) and Cameron Spence (38*) putting in any kind of performance. Brad Stephens 3-34 took his tally for the season to 35 and Ross Sands 3-25 took his tally to 29, were the major source of misery for the Alne batsmen. It is looking ominous for Alne and Pateley Bridge in the drop zone with Bishop Thornton also in the basement struggle. Thornton just lost out to Knaresborough Forest who have found some form of late and are mounting a concerted effort to stay in Division One after a ropey start to the season. Batting first Thornton managed to post 214/7  Josh Davies and Andrew Derrick both posted 63.  Jack Martin took 3-47.  Jack Kellett took the attack to Forest with figures of 5-48 but 87* from Jack Martin saw his side home.  Burton Leonard’s James Townsend (122* off 84 balls) was in imperious form as his side beat Hampsthwaite by 8 wickets. Nicky Smith (2-42) bagged his 50th wicket of the season for Leonard and Ali Wilson chipped in with 3-51. Matt Rangeley (53*) saw things home with Townsend in the end. Cup finalists Spofforth continue to have a mixed season. Bowled out for 175 by Helperby but in return dismissed the opposition for just 125. Craig Hunt (69) was the only resistance for Spoff in the face of 4-37 from Alistair Darnell and 3-28 from Dan Marston. In reply Helperby faired worse at the hands of James Roberts (4-21) and young Tom Lawson 3-30.

Division Two has seen a masterful display by Masham all season and with 16 wins out of 17 they have secured promotion to Division One. They are not champions yet so the sparkling stuff is still on hold.  This week they beat relegated Thornton-le-Moor.  Masham’s Ben Fielding has now taken over 50 wickets for the season.  Masham are likely to be joined in the promotion spots by Goldsborough who beat Blubberhouses by 7 wickets.  Batting first, Blubberhouses were going well at 94-1 Bash Khan (55) and Micah Campbell (39) but quick wickets then fell eventually being bowled out for 126.  Ben Mackrill took 5-30 and Kev Wilks 3-25.  Damon Ive hit another 74* to take his season total to 885.  Jarrod McPhee is stuck on 908 after a 5 ball duck this week.  Goldsborough finished the job off in the 30th over.  Markington are up to third after beating Raskelf.  Graham Bassitt took 4-15 and Riley Thomspon 3-34 to restrict Raskelf to 144/10  Trevor Reynolds top scored with 44.  Markington lost the wickets of openers Wayne Dennis (35) and Bassitt (33) in their reply but  Peter Johnson 31* and Robbie Wilberforce 33* saw Markington home.  Dacre Banks are in real danger after their 12th defeat of the season, this time at the hands of Harrogate Strays.  Dacre (30 points) are 6 points adrift of third bottom placed side Ripley (36).  Scotton (38) and Studley Royal 2nds (39) are not out of the relegation fight either.  Waqas Rasheed contributed 80 to Dacre’s total of 214/8  Andrew Scurr took 3-42 for Strays.  Jordan Marshall made 70 in reply but Dacre chipped away at the Harrogate lineup thanks to 5-30 from Izaya Broderick and Harrogate finished on 215/7 off 43.2 overs.  Another short game at Newby Hall as the home side were bowled out for just 66 with Ian Taylor taking 5-21 for the visitors, Ripley.  Ian Robinson made 49* at the top of the order and saw Ripley to 70/3 and a win by 7 wickets.  Scotton beat Studley Royal 2nds by 21 runs.  59 from Iain Campbell and contributions from Sam Halliday (36) and Gary Harland (41) but 4 wickets for Michael Litterbach and James Grange restricted Scotton to 196 all out.  Tom Halliday used all of his years of experience in taking 3-36 as Scotton bowled Studley out for 175.

Into Division Three and its a sad fair well to one of the greatest away trips of the season but Division Four welcomes Lofthouse and Middlesmoor who go through the trap door with Rainton and Ripon 2nds possibilities to follow them down. At the other end of the table, Wath and Melmerby (73 points) and Burnt Yates (73 points) are neck and neck for the title even after Yates slipped up against Middleham. Bolton Abbey are snapping at their heals in third waiting to pounce on any mistakes but they couldn’t overcome a rampant Bishop Monkton. Tony Whittaker smashed 145* in Monkton’s total of 239/2. Bolton Abbey were bowled out for 212 thanks to 5-34 from Jim Hutchinson. Rob Mayo hit 63 for Abbey. Wath and Melmerby 164/10 beat Rainton 117/10 Pick of the game was Daniel Bettles-Hall who took 5-39 and Antony Addison’s 4-58 for Rainton. Not to be outdone, Bobby Hilton took 7-28 doing the damage and piling on the pressure to Rainton.

Division Four has lots to play for with Boroughbridge and Staveley looking good for promotion but who will join them? Thornton Watlass, Ouseburn 2nds or Killinghall?

In Division Seven, West Tanfield 2nds gained promotion without playing after Rainton 2nds were unable to raise a side.

Division Eight saw only two fixtures completed with 4 teams unable to raise sides.

The race for the player of the year looks like its between two team mates. Bobby Hilton is in top spot with Dan Harris in second. Both play for Wath and Melmerby in Division Three. The rest of the top 10 is made up of Micah Campbell (Blubberhouses), Lee Davison (Spennithorne and Harmby), Ben Fielding (Masham), Luke Spence (Ripley), Jarrod McPhee (Goldsborough), Bradley Clark (Raskelf), Nicky Smith, (Burton Leonard), Chris Gill (Darley). 6 of the top 10 are overseas players.

So far this season, across all League competitions we have used a total of 2050 players.  Those players that also play junior age group cricket as well as senior cricket are included so the numbers of matches are inflated slightly.  However, players playing less than 5 matches is 688.  Players playing 5 to 10 matches is 532, players playing 11 to 15 matches is 543.  Players playing 16 to 20 matches is 274 and over 20 matches is 13 players.  It seems we have a real issue with players playing less than 5 matches!
