Ouseburn Wrap Up the Nidderdale Championship
The weather and (lack) of player availability took its toll on this round of fixtures. Many games were able to start but afternoon rain put paid to quite a few games. You know its a grim day when the game at Alne falls victim to the weather.

On a brighter note, Ouseburn take the championship with two games to go after a rain affected draw and 2 points gave them a lead at the top of Division One that no team can overhaul.  Congratulations to Dave Cummings and his team and all at Ouseburn Cricket Club for their third title in six years. This century, Killinghall have won the Champions pennant five times, with Newby Hall, Pannal and Ouseburn all equal on three victories. Studley Royal, Hampsthwaite and Spofforth have won it once.

With the title wrapped up, thoughts turn to the bottom end of the table where Pateley Bridge have won two on the bounce (their only 2 wins of the season) and perhaps the signing of Joe Preece from Knaresborough was the shrewdest bit of business by the Badgers. Pateley restricted the visitors West Tanfield to 221-9. Julian Hulbert made 60 with 4 wickets for Tom Fryer and 2 apiece for brother Olie Fryer and Nick Shirt. Shirt took the attack to the Tanfield bowlers and smashed 111* passing the target in the last over. As a result, Pateley move off the bottom of the table to be replaced by Bishop Thornton who lost to Darley. Alne’s 2 points gives them a gap of 7 to Pateley Bridge but its going to be tight.  Pateley Bridge entertain Bishop Thornton on the last day of the season.

Birstwith have struggled in the past couple of weeks but this week is was all about Burton Leonard’s Aussie Nicky Smith. He took another 6 wickets to take his tally to 56 Saturday wickets for the season.

At the bottom of Division Two it is going right down to the wire for the remaining relegation place.  Sadly Thornton-le-Moor’s fairy tail was not to be, but they will be back for sure.  Dacre Banks picked up what could be an invaluable 6 points at home to promoted Masham and are now on 42 points level wth Harrogate Strays and Ripley.  Harrogate must play Goldsborough next week, Ripley play Scotton and Blubberhouses and Studley Royal play Masham and Harrogate in the final game.

At the other end of the table, Goldsborough picked up 5 points against Thornton-le-Moor.  If Markington gain maximum points from their remaining two games and Goldsborough fail to pick up any, they will be level on points in second place.  The final promotion place will then go down to net run rate.  Exciting or what?

Division Three is where the battles are. There are five teams in the race for promotion between Wath and Melmerby (81), Burnt Yates (79),Bolton Abbey (76) and Middleham (73) and Whixley (71). Middleham bowled Bishop Monkton out for 42 and easily took the 6 points. Burnt Yates put in a shift against struggling Rainton. Batting first Yates made 213-7 with contributions from Andy MacKay 54* and Dominic Taylor 45. Anthony Addison then made 94 but was one of Taylor’s 5 victims with the ball and Rainton were dismissed for 174. If the rain hadn’t spoilt things at Lofthouse the title race might have been different. Lofthouse made 200-8, Dave Dunford making 52, off their 45 overs and Wath and Melmerby were on 16-0 before the rains came to the top of the Dale. Rainton or Ripon 2nds will join Lofthouse and Middlesmoor in relegation. The two sides play each other next week with just 3 points between them.

Borougbridge and Staveley are Champions of Division Four. Killinghall move up into second place with a win over Alne 2nds but Thornton Watlass and Ouseburn 2nds are all in the hunt for promotion. Crakehall are relegated but joining them will either be Masham 2nds or Studley Royal 3rds.

North Stainley are confirmed as promoted from Division Five but are not yet champions as second placed Sessay are on 76 breathing down their necks. Mathematically Newby Hall 2nds and Newton-le-Willows could finish level on points with Sessay but the two play each other on the final week of the season. Blubberhouses 2nds and Bishop Thornton 2nds remain rooted to the bottom of the table

Seems as though it was a good (better) day to be a bowler although Harrogate’s Cooper Smith defied that logic with 162 against Middleham 2nds. In the same game, Jonathan Hatchard took 4-8. Spennithorne and Harmby are 10 points clear of Harrogate 4ths at the top of Division Six. Both are now confirmed as promoted. Barring a massive choke Spennithorne will be Champions.  It looks to be two from four for relegation at the bottom.  Pannal 3rds, (21) Pannal Ash (24), Bolton Abbey 2nds (28) and Middleham 2nds (29).

West Tanfield 2nds are enjoying being Champions and took all 6 points from their game with Beckwtihshaw 3rds. In the race for second place, second played third, but Birstwith 3rds were beaten by Thirks 3rds to narrow the gap to 3 points. Rainton 2nds are long gone down to Division Eight and then it could be a fight between Knaresborough Forest 3rds (34), Ripley 3rds (39) Beckwithshaw 3rds (41) for the final relegation place into the basement.

Division Eight has always been a bit of a mess with 14 teams but became more so after Burton Leonard 3rds folded and the high number of concessions. In top spot are Scotton 2nds and in second are North Stainley 2nds but Stainley only have one more game but just need a win to secure promotion. Ouseburn 3rds could potentially sneak that place if Stainley lose their final game.
