After the huge success of our T20 Finals day over the Bank Holiday weekend, this Sunday, 4th September, we turn our attention to the final of our premier League cup competition. The Atkinson Swires Senior Knockout Cup will be contested between Spofforth and Darley with wickets pitched at 1:30pm at Ouseburn Cricket Club. This 40 over contest will see an array of talent on display and we can expect a fiercely fought battle.
Spofforth beat Knaresborough Forest in the first round by 21 runs with Nick Robinson hitting 129 and Tom Clark taking 5-71. The second round saw an easier win over Studley Royal 2nds but Nick Robinson starred with the ball this time taking 5-16. Burton Leonard were brushed aside in the quarter final and it was Aussie Andrew Botegga who stepped up to anchor the innings with 138. He and Pat Gannon put on 245 for the first wicket. There was a nail-biter in the semi final against Birstwith and Spofforth won with just 5 balls left. Bottega’s 121 and Robinson’s 118 setting a challenging total of 309.
Darley’s journey to the final saw them beat Bishop Thornton in the first round by 85 runs, Joe Furniss taking 3-24. Rob Hainsworth’s 105 in the second round put paid to the Masham challenge alongside 3-33 from Chris Gill. There was some controversy in the quarter final as Darley lost to Harrogate Strays but only after Strays played an ineligible player and were removed from the competition. Darley had a very convincing win in the semi final against Helperby thanks to 4-25 from Ross Sands in turn bowling them out for just 118 after Chris Gill hit 100 in the first innings.
Everyone is welcome at Ouseburn and the bar will be open with refreshments available and a raffle with proceeds going to Yorkshire Cancer Research.
