2017 has seen a new development in our cup competitions, an opt in model. several clubs decided not to field a team in this competition so Round One saw just four fixtures. This became three as Spofforth continue their tough season with a forfeit against Studley Royal 2nds
In the three ties that did take place, the early Division One pace setters, Birstwith beat Bishop Thornton by 39 runs [scorecard]. Birstwith posted a challenging 269-8 with Jonny Millward hitting 57, Pete Hardisty 55* Andrew Hyland took 3-33 and Matt Varley 3-51 for the Curlews. Hyland hit 66 and Andrew Derrick 60 but 5 wickets for Chris Base saw the Curlews fall short. Birstwith go on to play Alne in Round Two.
A big score of 108 for Jason Chyer and Dom Taylor’s 88 saw Burnt Yates post 302-5 against 10 man Dacre Banks. [scorecard] Mitchell Hearn (74) and Steve Ellison (73) got Dacre off to a flyer and a first wicket stand of 115 but that was about it and Dacre were dismissed for 222 in the 33rd over. Burnt Yates will play Blubberhouses in Round Two.
On the back of their first League win, Wath and Melmerby welcomed Knaresborough Forest. Forest batted first and posted 222-8. [scorecard] An early setback with Aaron Brunner going for just 17 on what can only be described as a road, and then struggling on 79-7, Ben Challis (60) and Stewart Pyke (53*) rebuilt the innings. There were 4 wickets for Ben Kettlewell. A first wicket stand of 83 between 2016 golden balls Bobby Hilton (45) and Kettlewell (48) gave Wath a good start but only Paul Richardson’s 22 down the order put in much of a display. 3 wickets for Challis (3-32), Brunner (3-32) and Pyke (3-10) got rid of the Wath challenge in the 35th over. A first win in 2017 for Forest and a second round tie at West Tanfield awaits.
