Further Information

The U11 pairs final proved to be a more entertaining match than the score might suggest. The pitch was a real 'sticky' and both sets of bowlers found plenty of movement, the conditions being exploited particularly well by the spinners on both sides. Henderson of Pannal set the tone with some unplayable deliveries and helped by all round tight bowling and fielding the Birstwith batsmen had to work hard for their '265' which would have been much lower if Pannal had held their catches or had a little more luck. Notwithstanding Pannal were still confident they could get the necessary runs but they had reckoned without the superb bowling and fielding display from Birstwith. The crowd were twice stunned when what seemed like certain fours were instead brilliantly caught at 'short cover' off Foxton. This temporarily knocked the stuffing out of Pannal who added to their misfortune with some injudicious shots and hesitant running. Although the game was all but lost Pannal to their credit staged something of a fight back, led by the big hitting Whittington who top scored on the day. Birstwith however were worthy winners and congratulations are due not just for their performance with bat & ball but also for their competitive but fair & sportsmanlike attitude. Pannal too were a credit to the club and deserved their runner-up medals for their unbeaten run in the regular season.
