Further Information

After a miserable, rainy Saturday it was a relief that Sunday morning was bright and sunny (if a little windy), allowing this 2nd round Coad Cup tie to go ahead. Both teams had regular players unavailable due to the schools’ half-term but fielded full teams of willing players. Knaresborough won the toss and decided to bat first. This looked like it was a good decision after a couple of great 4’s by Ben and a couple of loose deliveries that went for 4 wides and 4 no-balls. However, Jordan and Jonathan then got their range with Jonathan bowling an excellent maiden. They were helped by a spectacular direct hit run out from Ben Stokes. Matthew Bates and Jack both did well to come back from shaky starts to their bowling stints to each bowl excellent second overs despite a magnificent 6 by Max. Ben (2-0-4-2) and Matthew Walmsley then bowled well, with Matthew taking a wicket with his first ball, and were assisted by a calmly taken run out by Jonathan, though Matthew Everstead kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side. Tyler Cant making his Beckwithshaw debut then bowled two great overs (2-0-2-1) including a wicket maiden after clean bowling Alex with a fantastic ball that swung in late and hit the top of off stump. Grace was her usual accurate self. Knaresborough ended on 253 which was a great effort with some of their regulars missing and seemed to be a competitive total. In reply Beckwithshaw got off to a steady start through Grace and Tyler despite a wicket thanks to a fine catch by Ben Brennan, who also took a wicket himself with a clean bowled. However, steady partnerships between Matthew W and Ben (30 runs) and Matthew B and Jack (20 runs), with all four batsmen hitting great boundaries, meant that Beckwithshaw were slightly ahead when the final pair Jordan and Jonathan came to the wicket. Jordan was his usual belligerent self with an innings of 32 runs (6 fours and 1 six) and Jonathan played some beautifully controlled shots in his 14. During this impressive partnership Alex was desperately unlucky since he bowled a really good over that would have probably been a maiden if it had been to anyone other than Jordan. The final pair added 55 runs to ensure that Beckwithshaw ran out comfortable winners with 323. Thanks to John for arranging the match at fairly short notice and to his Knaresborough side for giving us a competitive match with lots of good things to take out of it for both teams. We look forward to playing them again in the League in a few weeks time.
