Friday 18 August 2006 - 50+ County Championship

It is ten years since the Yorkshire 50+ County Cricket Team won the Championships. Since then there have been varying amounts of success. Last season they reached the Quarter Finals, only to lose by one wicket to Warwickshire.

This season, having won the Northern Group, it was Warwickshire again in the Last 16 Knock Out Round and in a rain affected match Yorkshire cam through successfully. The Quarter Final opponents were Norfolk, away. A long trip to play at Swardeston (South Norwich), saw Yorkshire have their best result. Yorkshire batted first and scored 307 for 6 in 45 overs (John Flintoff 86, Phil Sant 86, Murphy Walwyn 62). In a high scoring match Norfolk were finally all out for 238 with Mick Scott (3 for 45) the best of our bowlers.

The Semi Final will be against Kent (The 2005 Champions) at Studley Royal C.C., Ripon on Bank Holiday Sunday, 27th August at 1 p.m.

The Squad of 13 players come from all over Yorkshire:-

Alan Steers (Captain), Elland CC
Martin Ivill (V. Capt), Barnsley CC
Tommy Stafford (Wkt), Yarm CC
Bob Cummins, Doncaster CC
John Flintoff , Sessay CC
Peter Graham, Otley CC
Fred Gunthorpe, Ackworth CC
Mick Kenyon, Dringhouses CC
Dennis Midwood, Elland CC
Phil Sant, Ilkley CC
Mick Scott, Tong Park CC
Murphy Walwyn, Woodlands CC
Mel Wood, Ackworth CC

And they are managed by John Stead, Westwood Park CC.

Should Yorkshire beat Kent in the Semi Final they will be away for the Final on Sunday, 10th September.

Despite its success the Team receives no funding and has to raise all its finances themselves through raffles, tombolas, book sales and the players paying all their own expenses. In March, the first Dinner was held with the main speaker Geoff Miller, England Selctor and Derbyshire and England all rounder. It proved to be a great evening making a profit of over £1,000. This has helped allow the players to not have to pay match fees.

All those involved are very dedicated cricketers and Club players at all levels of the game.

It doesn’t stop there because it could well be that within the next season or two there will be a 60+ competition. In Yorkshire we already have 16 players keen to play.

All matches are very competitive, if a little slower than normal Test and County Cricket. We are always on the lookout for good quality over 50 cricketers, who are still playing regular Club cricket.

So why not come along and have great day out on Sunday, 27th August.

Monday 14 August 2006 - Atkinson Swires Final

The above match will take place on Sunday 20 August at Pannal CC when Killinghall will play Pannal. Wickets pitched at 2pm.

The U13 Arrow Readydrive Nidderdale League U13's Lords Taverners team completed their warm up for the forthcoming Lords Taverners Yorkshire Festival with a
4 wicket win over the Airedale and Wharfedale league at Studlet Royal CC on Sunday 23rd July.

Put in to bat Aire and Wharfe made 129 off 39.5 overs. The combination of wicket keeper James Ford (Bilton cc) and Peter Barnes (Knaresborough CC) had a visiting batsmen in a spin. The Knaresborough leg spinner claiming the first four victims all stumped. Ben Coad (Studley Royal CC) claimed three wickets and there was a wicket each for George Lamb (Studley), Nick Hare (Pannal CC) and Graham Whiles (Knaresborough CC) allowing keeper Ford his fifth victim.

In reply Nidderdale were off to a good start with openers Peter Barnes and Josh North (Harrogate CC) putting on 35 for the first wicket. When Barnes fell for 29 the total was 53 and a mini collapse saw the Nidderdale league on 85-4 however James Ford and Graham Whiles steadied the ship with a partnership of 31, Whiles making 13 and Ford contributing a fine 36. Nidderdale finished four wicket winners with three overs to go.

Friday 14 July 2006 - From the Management Committee

Masham faced a charge that they played an ineligible player, Brett Harrop, in the league and Atkinson Swires cup. Brett Harrop was registered by the club as an overseas player but had played first class cricket in one match - for Victoria against the touring Indian side at Melbourne in November 2003 - and was therefore ineligible to play in the Nidderdale League. The charge was admitted. While the disciplinary panel accepted that Masham CC had acted in good faith throughout and had genuinely been unaware that Harrop had played first class cricket in 2003, the disciplinary panel reprimanded the club, deducted five points from their first team and disqualified them from taking any further part in the Atkinson Swires cup. On appeal the third penalty was rescinded so the club will be able to compete in the Atkinson Swires cup.

Sunday 26 February 2006 - Ground Marking Guide

A revised copy of the ground marking guide in .pdf format is available to download from today. It is hoped that this guideline will reduce the number of inaccuracte markings that were submitted by teams last season. The Ground Committee would urge all captains and markers to familarise themselves with the guidelines before the start of the new season and keep a copy in their cricket bags for reference at away games. Monday 16 January 2006 - Help Required by Harrogate Gas Sports

From Richard Canham

"Harrogate Gas Sports CC are currently in dispute with our landlords who are looking to levy a rent increase of five thousand percent (£20 to £1,000) which puts it at a level where the club could no longer afford to survive (we have 15 paying members) . We have employed legal representation (Martin Blackham) and are grateful for the support he has offered us. To help us in our negotiations and perhaps secure a few more years of Gas Sports cricket could I appeal to the clubs for assistance?

We are looking for examples of the current rent levels paid by clubs in the area and what facilities i.e. ground size, clubhouses etc this entitles you to?

We are also looking for an independent assessment of the ground and facilities by someone qualified to do so. This will help us build our case for a rent level acceptable to both parties.

If you can help with either of these requests or have any other information to share or assistance to offer your fellow cricketers then please e-mail me at richard.Canham@tiscali.co.uk"
