Wednesday 1 August 2007 - Theft at Lofthouse & Middlesmoor

From John Downey

Could we please ask for your help in informing all member clubs of the League about the mower theft at Lofthouse between Monday afternoon and Tuesdaymorning, this week.

The mower was a recently fully reconditioned machine, a Ransomes Super Certes 51. It is a 20 inch, 10 bladed cylinder mower, fitted with a Kubota GS130 petrol engine.

Immediate identifiers are a new bottom blade, front roller adjusters and cylinder disengage cable, and the 10 bladed newly painted cylinder. If offered, it is likely to be glaringly obvious that the makers identification plate will have been removed from the right-hand side (facing forward) of the machine body.

Any help given will be greatly appreciated.

Tuesday 31 July 2007 - Arrow Ready Drive Nidderdale Joe Lumb

The Arrow Ready Drive Nidderdale Joe Lumb side completed the group stage of the competition with a 28 run victory over their Wetherby League counterparts at Thorp Arch and Boston Spa CC on Sunday.

Electing to bat first Nidderdale had an early set back with the departure of George Owram, however a superb stand of 136 between Matt Cavanagh ( 62 ) and Sam Dale ( 84 ) provided a platform for an imposing total which was achieved through a quickfire 65 not out from James Tattersall and 27 from Ben Hodgson who also remained unbeaten. Nidderdale took tea at 255-3.

Wetherby made a spirited reply through Matthew Wood ( 48 ) and a rapid 42 from Gary Bettison, but Cavanagh completed a fine individual performance in taking 5-58 and ensured that Wetherby fell short of the target.

Nidderdale now await the outcome of next Sunday's match involving close rivals Heavy Woollen v East Yorkshire before they know which route they progress in the competition. Either the Joe Lumb final should East Yorkshire win or the Jack Lee Trophy runners up final should Heavy Woollen win.

Nidderdale came out with a comprehensive 47 run win over a full strength Bradford junior league side in their latest Joe Lumb group match staged at Beckwithshaw on Sunday.

On a low slow wicket Nidderdale found runs hard to come by and at the half way stage of the innings had progressed to 39-2 off 25 overs, but a superb 74 from Sam Dale ensured that the team took tea with a competitive looking 161-8.

This proved to be the case as accurate pace bowling from Alex Lilley, Matt Ingham and Ali Wilson allied to the attacking leg spin of Tom Lilley quickly reduced Bradford to 56-6 in reply, Nidderdale finally closing their opponents innings at 114. Tom Lilley finishing with 4-47 and Wilson 3-16.

Monday 18 June 2007 - JUNIOR CRICKETERS - PLAYING IN ADULT MATCHES

An extract from a letter from Frank Kemp ECB - Head of Operations – Non first Class Cricket in reply to a letter from Erik Thompson (Assistant League Secretary) regarding Junior Players Umpiring in Adult Matches

The new guidance on Junior cricketers playing Adult Matches was developed by the ECB Welfare Management Group in response to justifiable concerns about players as young as 8 years old appearing in competitive adult matches and to complement the Child Welfare policy ‘Safe Hands’ which has been accepted and implemented through the game.

In drawing up the guidance we were aware that the lower divisions of many Leagues include a number of young players and we were anxious to ensure that, in the vast majority of cases, these young players should be able to continue to play. However we wanted to ensure that Leagues and clubs understood their ‘duty of care’ responsibilities towards these young players and that parents had the opportunity to confirm that they were happy for the young players to take part in adult matches.

As far as I can tell at this stage of the season the new guidance has not caused significant problems for the vast majority of clubs although we will of course continue to monitor the situation throughout the season.

On the question of a young player acting as umpire during the course of a match the position is in essence the same as when they are playing – the captain retains the responsibility for the conduct of the match and for the ‘duty of care’ to the young player and must therefore exercise judgement in deciding whether or not it is reasonable to ask a young player to umpire. There is nothing in the guidance which prevents a young player from taking a turn as umpire and it is certainly good for their cricketing development that they have the opportunity at an appropriate stage in the match.
