Monday 2 November 2009 - Assistance needed from Clubs

From Bob Horne:

I am in the process of compiling a bibliography of all books published by or about Yorkshire cricket and cricketers. This includes histories of clubs and leagues, whether in pamphlet form, as part of a centenary programme, or a longer study. The bibliography will form part of the Yorkshire CCC website, and will also be available at the Huddersfield University Cricket Research Centre.

I am asking clubs to contact me if there is, or has been, any such publication relating to their club. The details I require are:

Full title
Author’s full name (where available)
Publisher/ printer
Town or city (or village) in which published
Date of publication

I can be contacted on bobthebrod@fsmail.net

Much of this information is, I know, available in a small selection of reference works, but it is becoming increasingly clear that there is material which has escaped the net. I am interested in anything, no matter how obscure it may seem.

Many thanks & Best wishes

Monday 10 August 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U15s Lord Taverners

Nidderdale U 15s finished 3rd in their group of 4, winning 1 and losing 2 of their festival matches. This was slightly disappointing but given injuries and loss of players to club commitments and representative cricket the squad was depleted severely for the last game.

The Bradford Central league team were bowled out for 81 at Pannal on Monday 3rd August, Tom Fryer taking 2-18, George Lamb 3-7, Josh Chandler 2-16 and a wicket each for Sam Thompson and Graham Whiles. In reply Nidderdale had an easy 9 wicket win, Ed Robinson scoring 32 and Michael Donnelly scoring 31*.

The following day the team travelled to Masham to play a strong Heavy Woollen side. Nidderdale batting first scored 153 for 8 . A stand of 77 for Nidderdale's 3rd wicket between skipper George Lamb 40 and Callum Irvine 52 was the highlight. A late 16 from Ashley Griffen added to the total. Heavy Woolen scoring 154 for 7 won by 3 wickets with two overs to spare. For Nidderdale Graham Whiles took 3-38 and Angus Shaw's 2-26. The ground fielding being the main difference between the two sides. Although defeated this was a good performance by the boys.

A much changed and depleted squad travelled to Green Lane on Wednesday to play the eventual overall winners Airedale & Wharfedale. Batting first Nidderdale made 146-9 owing much to a splendid knock of 51 from Callum Irvine, extras being next top scorer with 24, Gareth Bass adding 17 with a late flurry. Aire and Wharfe in reply were seldom troubled and finished winners by 8 wickets, Sam Halliday taking both the Aire Wharfe wickets.

Tuesday 4 August 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U13s Lord Taverners

The Lord Taverner's U13's tournament was severely hit by the weather and conditions.

Nidderale's first match against Bradford Central at Follifoot was abandoned after 21 overs with Nidderdale on 70 for 3 (Josh Crewe 23 no & Harry Lamb 20).

The following day's fixture was against Barnsley at Beckwithshaw, the visitors batting first made 179 for 6 with Harry Lamb and Harry Lister each taking 2 wickets. In reply Nidderdale were 72 for 6 but a very mature partnership of 57 with some good shot selection by Sam Davies (44) and James Clark (33) kept Nidderdale in the hunt but were eventually bowled out for 162.

The next match against Bradford Junior League the eventual winners of the competition was at Pudsey St Lawrence, having won the toss Nidderdale elected to field and at 62 for 5 with some accurate bowling by Craig Broadley, Charlie McGivern and Harry Lister Nidderdale were well on top but a fine inning by Bradford's D Budge of 131 (who went onto make 150no and 64no in his next 2 matches) reached 253 for 6. In reply Nidderdale were bowled out for a disappointing 106 with only James Clark 22 and Adam Rider 19 showing any resistance.

The final match against Scarborough was called off due to the weather. Overall Nidderdale's fielding was poor, too many bad balls were bowled and some poor shots played.

Monday 3 August 2009 - Junior Cup Finals

The Bob Mellor Cup Final was again uncompleted last night.

Following 2 cancelled dates, the Final at least commenced last night with Pannal scoring 112 for 7 in 22 overs. The rain however prevented Studley Royal from starting their innings.

The Final is now rescheduled for a fourth time for Sunday 6th September 10.00am at Knaresborough Forest.

The rearranged date for the The North/South Division play off final between Beckwithshaw CC and Ouseburn CC is now Sunday 9th August 10:30 am

Tuesday 28 July 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U11s Lord Taverners

The Lord Taverner's Under 11 final took place at Spofforth C.C. on Sunday with Nidderdale losing by 7 wickets against a Heavy Woollen team containing fivew players who have represented Yorkshire this season.

Batting first, Nidderdale struggled early on as Heavy Woollen bowled with great discipline. After 15 overs Nidderdales total of 30-3 looked as if it was to be a one sided game, but a fantastic 60 from man of the match George Davies and 41 from opener Ed Barnes pulled the final total up to 129 for 5.

Unfortunately the second half was marred by rainfall, making bowling and fielding difficult. An early wicket each for Tom Lawson and George Davies gave Nidderdale a promising start, but once again we bowled too many wides and finally lost the game with 3 overs to go.

Congratulations to this year's squad for a fantastic effort and special thanks to Harrogate, Ouseburn, Alne and Birstwith cricket clubs, for providing excellent facilities as hosts for trials and games.

Tuesday 28 July 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com U15s Lord Taverners

A large squad has been selected as some players will miss one or more games due to Yorkshire Schools matches and Studley Royal's involvement in a national U15s competition.

The fixtures are:
Monday August 3 v Bradford Central League at Pannal C.C.
Tuesday August 4th v Heavy Woollen at Masham C.C.

Wednesday 22 July 2009 - 2009 Arrowselfdrive.com Arthur Barrett Cup Final

The final of the league U17s Arthur Barrett cup was played at Follifoot CC on Monday 20th July.

Ouseburn batted first. The opening pair of Ross Mckenzie 25 and Jamie Bryant 78 set the pace putting on108 for the first wicket. Mike Ainsley batted steadily for 14 at no 3.The middle order toppled due to a good spell of slow bowling from James Riley 5 for 22 and Johnny Millward 3 for13. Ouseburn finished on 156.

Birstwith had a steady start against good pace bowling from Jamie Bryant and Mike Ainsley. Pete Hardisty 35 and James Riley 19 stepped up the pace but they were pegged back by a fine spell from Ben Jones 4 for 35 and Ian Campbell.Birstwith finished on 112 for 8, Ouseburn winning by 44 runs.

Wednesday 22 July 2009 - 2009 Ingilby Shield

This year’s Ingilby Shield is once again taking place at Ripley Cricket Club and will see an Overseas XI take on a Nidderdale District Representative XI. The match will commence at 14.00 pm on Sunday 2nd August. It will be ideal for an afternoon of entertainment with a Barbeque, Beer Tent, ample free parking and toilets.

Ripley Club Chairman Bob Brown said, “This is the seventh anniversary of this contest and no doubt both teams are wanting to gain the upper hand against their opponents. With The Ashes contest going on at the same time there is a lot to be replicated. We are perfectly balanced for an excellent afternoon of cricket with friendly rivalry at the centre of the game. Most of the teams have come across their opponents during the season in either the league or in cup matches so it’s time to square things off.”

The team selection is currently taking place with both sides keeping a fairly tight lid on their team members and secret weapons. Come along and support your club, village or country for an afternoon of English entertainment or visit the nearby Village, World Famous Ice Cream Shop or Castle and Gardens of Ripley.

Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale Joe Lumb made it three wins in a row by beating the Craven League at Keighley Cricket Club.

Craven batted first on a pitch which encouraged spin and seam The home side lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to use all of their alloted overs finishing on 152 all out.

Stand out bowlers were Henry 3 for 30, Jamie Bryant 2 for 20 , Mike Ainsley 2 for 18 and Jonny Tattersall who took a key wicket in the Middle of the innings to dismiss their top batsman.

The Nidderdale Batsmen were in destructive form blasting their way to victory for the loss of three wickets. James Riley 77 and Peter Barnes 55 doing the business with 20 overs to spare.

Tuesday 21 July 2009 - ARROWSELFDRIVE.COM NIDDERDALE U11S REACH THE FINAL

The Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale Lords Taverners U11s pulled off a 32 run win in their semi final game against Leeds, at Birstwith, in front of a good crowd.

Batting first on an excellent pitch, Nidderdale were on the back foot at 23 for 4 against good swing bowling but a superb 77 not out off 44 balls from George Davies (Goldsborough) with good support from Tom Lawson (Harrogate), Henry Hopkinson (Birstwith), and George Bentley (Cundall Manor School) gave Nidderdale a good total to defend of 169.

In reply Leeds were always behind the run rate with 4 run outs rounding off another superb Nidderdale fielding performance. The bowling was sometimes wayward with Ed Barnes (Knaresborough) and Tom Lawson the most accurate. Leeds finished on 137 for 9 giving the Nidderdale juniors a trip this Sunday to Spofforth for the final against Heavy Woollen. 2.00pm start

All credit to the Birstwith groundsman for producing a first rate playing surface after all the recent rain and to the work from club members for their contribution to a successful afternoon.

Monday 13 July 2009 - ARROWSELFDRIVE.COM NIDDERDALE JOE LUMB XI

Nidderdale Joe Lumb win against North Yorksire

Nidderdale won the toss and decided to bat in their match at Studley Royal last Sunday. Opener Matt Henry (34) and number 4 Ned Hammond (43) batted with great skill against a good bowling attack where patience was the order of the day. Unfortunateltely the rest of the batsmen were not as disciplined and Nidderdale posted a below parr score of 142 in 50 overs. In response, however, Nidderdale attacked from the start and Jon Hare (3 for 26) and James Rawlings (2-13) ripped into the top order aided by some excellent fielding.

Mike Ainsley grabbed three catches and got 2 for 6 as North Yorkshire were eventually skittled for 77 only their second loss of the season

On Sunday, the team travel to Keighley C.C. to play Craven.

Monday 13 July 2009 - ARROWREADYDRIVE.COM NIDDERDALE LORDS TAVERNERS U 11S

In there final group game against Sheffield, the Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U11's Lord Taverners lost a thrilling game by 3 wickets with one over left. Despite the defeat Nidderdale top their group winning three of their four games and go through to the semi final.

After losing 4 early wickets against some superb new ball bowling Nidderdale clawed there way to a respectable score of 138 for 8. James Botham top scored with a patient 33 not out, with useful contributions from George Bentley (21) and Henry Hopkinson (24).

In reply, Sheffield kept losing wickets but an unbroken stand of 25 runs saw Sheffield home when it looked likely that Nidderdale would pull it out of the bag. George Davies was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets. The ground fielding was exemplary, with one stop by Botham that will be remembered for a long time by those who saw it.

Nidderdale have a home draw for this Sundays semi final against Leeds to be played at Birstwith C.C. 2.00p.m. start.

Wednesday 8 July 2009 - Sunday Friendlies

From Gerard Moran

"I write on behalf of SS Peter and Paul Church and School from Yeadon near Leeds. We have started a cricket team and have played a couple of friendly matches with some more arranged.I am taking this opportunity to ask if you could be kind enough to provide some contacts which I could follow up with a view to possibly arranging a game on a Sunday.

I played for many years until retiring for family reasons. We have 3 to 4 players who are still playing league cricket of a good standard. The rest of the team is made up of players like myself and a couple who have not had too much experience. One of the reasons why we like to have a fixture in your area is so that we could possibly arrange a bus which would be filled with players and families and therefore have a good day out.

If you need to speak to me I can advise you of my telephone number as follows: 0752 1406142. It would be appreciated if you could reply with any information to my personal e-mail gm14theave@fsmail.net"

Tuesday 7 July 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U11s Lord Taverners

The Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale U 11s Lords Taverners won their third successive game by 19 runs against East Yorkshireat at Londesborough Park C.C.

Put into bat, Nidderdale struggled to a below par final total of 146 for the loss of 9 wickets which would have been less but for a quick 26 from George Davies (Goldsborough) and a last wicket partnership of 35 between Tim Williams (Pannal) and Ed Barnes (Knaresborough) who top scored with 70 not out.

In reply, East Yorkshire never kept up with the required run rate. Very good fielding restricting the home side to 127 for the loss of 6 wickets with Tom Lawson (Harrogate), Ben Bond and Oliver Hebblethwaite (both Beckwithshaw) the pick of the bowlers.

The final group game is this Sunday at Alne C.C. against Sheffield 2.00 pm start. Should Nidderdale win they have a home draw in the semi finals to be played on July 19th.

Pictured below are Harrogate CC's George Hampson and Tom Lawson in action.

Tuesday 7 July 2009 - Arrowselfdrive.com Nidderdale Joe Lumb

Barnstorming Victory For Nidderdale Joe Lumb Side
The Nidderdale Joe Lumb side batted first against a strong Halifax League side and posted a 287 run total in fifty overs.

Number 3 batsman Peter Barnes produced a beautifully crafted knock of 120 no and ranks as one of the best that coach Chris Henry has ever seen. He began by seeing off the new ball bowlers then used his feet brilliantly to take the attack to the bowlers. Chris Base joined him for the last 10 overs and produced an explosive 64 no.

Defending the total was not going to be easy on a very small ground but yet again the sides emphasis on fielding came to the fore. Nidderdale took eight catches including a Hatrick from Matt Henry and a stunner from James Rawling to dismiss their opener on 83. That catch was the turning point with Nidderdale running out the winners by 60 runs.

Pick of the Bowlers were John Hare with 3 for 45 and Jamie Bryant with 2 for 25. Mention should also be made of Keeper James Ford with a very tidy display generally and an excellent leg side stumping.

The next game is on Sunday at Studley Royal against the North Yorkshire South Durham at 1pm.

Monday 18 May 2009 - Touring Team Fixture Wanted

May I introduce myself as the Secretary of the Cricketers’ Club of New South Wales (Australia) See www.ccnsw.com

We are not the Shield side in disguise but essentially middle aged cricketers who have retired from the more competitive Grade cricket of our youth but want to continue playing. I am writing to you in your position as Secretary of the Nidderdale and District Amateur Cricket League in the hope that maybe you can help us, or perhaps put me in touch with someone who might be able to help us:-

1) We are undertaking our 3rd Tour to England this season and staying in York, arriving in the evening on Sunday 19 July and departing for Cambridge on the morning of Thursday 23 July.
2) We have arranged 3 confirmed fixtures against Whitby, East Bierley and Kirk Deighton over the Monday 20 –Wednesday 22 July
3) However our numbers wanting to play has grown to over 30 players!
4) I have been asked to explore the possibility of organising a second game on any one of those 3 days Monday- Wednesday
5) Given we would be turning out a second XI, I fear our average player age would probably be c 45! Once good players but now older.
6) From contacts via the Golden Oldies Tournament planned for 2010, it was suggested that perhaps sides in the Nidderdale league might be interested in playing a midweek social game of this nature (Serious on the field; social off!) during July this year.

Any interested clubs should contact:-

Wednesday 6 May 2009 - Junior Resultsheet system

Junior age group matches can now be entered online using the Send Resultsheet link under the Juniors tab along the top of the site. Please do not use the Men's version as there are a few differences so that Pairs Cricket can be incorporated.

The system works in an identical fashion to the Men's version and covers all age groups from under nine to under seventeen.

For those unfamilar with the system

1) Complete the sheet
2) Click Submit (Data is then saved on the site)
3) Double check the information on the sheet
4) Click Email (Site is updated an email sent to respective parties - Ackrills, Age Group Secretaries)

Pairs Cricket
When you select either U11 or U9 Pairs cricket there is the option to record the number of penaltly runs (dismissals) below extras. The system adds up the batsmens' scores plus 200 and then deducts this amount to give you a team total.

Hopefully there are no glitches and nothing has been missed, but if any issues do crop up or anyone has any questions please email me direct and I will endeavour to answer questions or fix bugs.

Monday 26 January 2009 - Ron Fry (1922-2009)

It is with great sadness that we report the death, at the age of 87, of Ron Fry, who was involved with the Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League for over forty years, latterly as Umpires Secretary. Ron had already been on the Management Committee for several years when he was given overall responsibility for the umpires in February 1976, and he continued to fulfill that role for 25 years until his retirement in 2001, which the league marked by presenting him with a painting at the annual dinner. Ron introduced umpires training courses to the league, greatly improving the general standard of umpiring throughout the league and thus enhancing the game for everyone, and he worked tirelessly, recruiting new umpires, training them and then fitting them into the weekly rota. He presented the Gladys Fry Rosebowl for the runner up in the Wath Cup in 1995, in memory of his wife, and leaves a son Alan and daughter Sheila: a second daughter, Elizabeth, pre-deceased him. Ron was a passionate gardener and won numerous prizes and awards at local horticultural shows. We extend his family and friends our support and sympathy at this sad time, and remember all that Ron achieved for the league.

There will be a service and interment at Stonefall Cemetry at 13:40 on Thursday 29th January: family flowers only, please, but donations can be given to the British Heart Foundation.

Monday 19 January 2009 - 2009 League Handbook
