Tuesday September 2007 - U9s Pairs League Final - Birstwith v Pannal Falcons

The U9's final took place early on finals day before the strong wind had subdued which took it's toll on what should have been a spectacular final. Birstwith won the toss and decided to bat and started well accruing runs slowly with some excellent running between the wicket, but were unable to find the boundary as Pannal produced some very good fielding. Pannal then managed to put on some pressure by keeping the run rate down with the next 2 pairs, leaving Birstwith final pair with some work to do to post a decent total and try as they might they found it difficult to pierce the field and some very tight bowling kept the total down to a very manageable 256.

Pannal then managed to keep their scoring to a very favourable rate, finding the boundary regularly, wickets kept falling due to some excellent catches, but the runs kept coming. Even the 7 year olds in the Birstwith team could see the game slipping away and in an effort to claw the game back started to give runs away with overthrows. By the time Pannal's skipper took the field with his partner they already had a commanding lead and was heard to say "nothing silly we just don't need to lose wickets", (Old head on young shoulders), however he then decided to ignore his own advice and went for it, eventually Pannal ended up on 297, a convincing victory.

A defeated but not deflated Birstwith skipper Harry Stanford then turned to his team to say "We didn't do bad for a village team"
