Thursday September 2007 - Ingilby Shield - Overseas XI v Nidderdale Representative XI
Ten Man Overseas team cling onto Victory !
Sunday 9th September 2007 saw Ripley CC host the fifth annual contest of the Ingilby Shield, where a thrilling game of cricket took place which kept both teams and spectators interested until the last ball was bowled. Nidderdale won the toss and elected to field, which after the first 3 overs looked like the correct decision as the Overseas were 6 for 2 thanks to the bowling of Karl Jankowicz and Will Liddle. Craig Gould 35, and Andrew Galbraith then came to the crease and steadied things down as Galbraith went on to hit 91, later supported by Troy Nolan 35 and Shanen Patel 24. Good spells of bowling from Dirk Van Dyk 5-1-20-0, Dave Cummings 5-0-28-2 and Matt Uffindall 8-0-32-3 only enabled the Overseas to keep the score ticking over and they eventually reached 225 with Richard Clark and Bob Brown refusing to part with their wickets as last of the ten men in.
After the tea interval, with the obligatory team photographs taken, Rob Ellis 26 and captain Ollie Uffindall took to the middle and raced to a quick fire 50 in the first 10 overs. After the fall of the second wicket, the ten man Overseas team put in a good spell of bowling from Bob Brown 6-0-24-0, Sam Green 8-1-32-1 and Shanen Patel 8-4-24-1, who contained the runs and made run scoring difficult for Nidderdale. Aiddie Monk 30 and Andrew Ellis 41, supported their captain who found himself with Karl Jankowicz 15 on the last over needing 13 to win. It fell upon the Overseas skipper Glen Loraine, 6-0-54-2, to bowl the final over and with some quick running between the stumps Nidderdale needed a four from the last ball to seal victory. With Uffindal on 96 it was just two runs that came from the final ball leaving him on 98 not out, which, although did not gain Nidderdale match victory, did win him man of the match along with bowling figures of 6-0-44-0.
League President and tournament namesake, Sir Thomas Ingilby, presented the team trophies and expressed his “thanks to both sides for turning out and making an excellent spectacle and a thrilling game of cricket played in the true spirit of the game. Umpires Mick Bell and Jeff Watkins presided over a wonderful game on what played like a perfect pitch with 500 runs scored in 80 overs. With the honours now standing at 3 – 2 to the Overseas XI, we look forward to next years rematch.”
