Monday July 2008 - Hollywood Comes to Nidderdale!

Chris Newton is looking for cricketers aged over 40 to represent the first ever Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League Golden Oldies XI, in a friendly match to be played at Ripley CC on the afternoon of Friday 8th August, 2008.

The opposition is, appropriately, Hollywood CC, all the way from Los Angeles, California. The club was founded by C Aubrey Smith 76 years ago and has fielded some very well known names over the years; Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, PG Wodehouse, Boris Karloff, David Niven, Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, Basil Rathbone, ‘Gubby’ Allen and Sir Laurence Olivier: to learn more see www.hollywoodcc.net.

The match will commence at 1.00pm and will be 30-35 overs. Hollywood CC describe their touring team as having an average age of 50 and ‘not great’ ability, so it’s a perfect opportunity for any of the league’s older players (you must be over 40 on the day of the match but there is no upper age limit) to wield the willow and turn the arm over in a friendly international match. Whilst the League XI will be doing its utmost to win (in the most sporting manner, naturally) the only thing that really matters on the day is that every player, on both sides, has the greatest of fun. Sir Thomas Ingilby is sponsoring the match and will be laying on a buffet lunch from midday (at the ground and tea later in the afternoon: there will be no match fee.

So, anyone who fancies following in the footsteps of Errol Flynn or Cary Grant, here’s your chance: contact Chris at chris@chrisnewton.entadsl.com and get yourself booked into the team: who knows what it could lead to? It will also be a early chance to savour the flavour of the International Golden Oldies Cricket Festival, which will take place in Nidderdale in August 2010. Hurrah for Hollywood!
