Sunday July 2008 - Bob Mellor Cup Final Match Report
The 40th Final of the Bob Mellor Cup was played on Friday the 18th July at Knaresborough Forest CC between Studley Royal CC U-15s and Knaresborough CC U-15s.
Studley Captain Ben Crewe won the toss and elected to bat. Knaresborough Captain Peter Barnes turned this decision on Studley with his opening bowlers Graham Whiles and Alex Gates dismissing Studley openers Crewe, Edward Robinson and then George Lamb very cheapy. Whiles recorded figures of 5 overs for 17 runs and 2 wickets and Gates 4 overs for 18 runs and 2 wickets. Crewe showed his mettle as an excellent captain with a few well chosen words to Nick Kimber and Tim Gilliatt who were able to steady the Studley innings putting on 35 retired and 24 out respectively. Barnes with 5 overs for 20 runs and 2 wickets together with James Webster 4 overs for 17 runs and 2 wickets brought some control back with the dismissal of big hitter Angus Shaw, Ben Coad, Jonathan Coates and Nick Stuart fairly cheaply. At the end of the Studley 22 overs Knaresborough had contained Studley to 92 runs for 8 wickets.
Barnes and Webster got the Knaresborough innings off to a fine start and were well on target with 31 runs off the first 6 overs for the loss of no wickets. Crewe then brought on the tried and tested Studley off and leg spinning partnership of Shaw and Lamb. Shaw bowled 5 overs with 1 maiden for 17 runs and 1 wicket. Lamb produced figures of 5 overs for 10 runs and 2 wickets. Barnes went for 22 and Webster 11.
With Knaresborough on 56 runs for 3 Studley were forced into a bowling change and turned to Nick Kimber who was faced with George Hobson on big hitting form. This proved to be an epic dual between bowler and batsman with Kimber finally dismissing Hobson with a fantastic leg stump yorker. Hobson had amassed 23 runs off only 20 balls including one massive 6.
With Knaresborough needing 10 runs to win off the last over it was always possible but Coad bowled very tightly and Knaresborough finished 5 runs short. Coad finished with figures of 4 overs for 19 runs.
Studley wicket-keeper Coates deserve special mention for conceding only one bye in the entire Knaresborough innings as does the fielding of Cameron Leader and Joe Harris which was excellent.
This was only the forth win in the Bob Mellor Cup for Studley in its 40 year history and with a young side Studley look forward to defending the Cup it in 2009!
