Monday April 2009 - Harrogate CC Fund Raiser

Members of Harrogate Cricket Club will set out on a four-day trek across the Yorkshire Dales over Easter, as they attempt to raise funds for their new pavilion.

A group of about 20 players and members will swap their cricket spikes for their walking boots along the Dales Way footpath, taking them from Bolton Abbey to Dent.

Starting on Easter Monday, April 13, the 44 mile hike includes overnight stops in Grassington, Kettlewell and Ribblehead before finishing in Dent on Thursday 16.

The St George’s Road side were left devastated when their 112-year-old wooden pavilion, which housed showers, changing rooms, memorabilia and playing equipment was targeted by arsonists at the end of May last year.

Since the fire, Harrogate, who host two matches each Saturday at The County Ground, have managed with portable cabins; far from ideal for a club that has seen the likes of Sir Viv Richards and Sir Ian Botham play there in the past.

The club’s attempts at gaining funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board, local council and Yorkshire Cricket Board have proved unsuccessful so far and they are looking to the generosity of the public to help rebuild part of Harrogate’s sporting history.

Chairman Steve Culleton said: “The cost of a new pavilion will be sizeable and it is important that we pull together as a club to make this a reality.

“Events such as this are a fantastic opportunity for businesses, organisations and individuals to invest in the redevelopment of a new, improved facility that will help to re-establish the Club as premier force in cricket in Yorkshire.”

Walk organiser Dave Swainston said: “We have already been out for a practice walk, and the whole group is really looking forward to the challenge.

“If the weather is fine, then it promises to be a wonderful week for the members that are walking, whilst also raising important funds for the cricket club.”

Anybody interested in joining the walk can do so by contacting club secretary Simon Corner on 01423 561301 or by emailing harrogatecc@btconnect.com.
