Further Information
Not a shock result as 'houses turned up with just two recognised bats - Ed and Amy, and eight in total. Thankfully the toss was won and Glass batted first. A daring opening partnership of Holmes & Sunderland, with numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 scrambling for pads. Given past history and the opening pairs almost suicidal tendancy of running between the wickets it was a surprise they lasted as long as they did. Capt Ted decided to avoid Capn Kenyon at all costs, clearly less danger of a dismissal if not facing, but when batting with Sunny danger is never too far away. Only a couple of close dodgy calls from the captain this time. Thankfully Sunny was running downhill so his momentum (some might say bulk and gravity) got him home. The early 3's and then the rotation of the strike to the leggy took their toll. Instead of calling for oxygen Ted looped one gently off the second or third bounce to an unsuspecting midwicket. Some confusion (no ball?) some hilarity (Sunny) and some delightment (all the Spofforth boys) to see the end of Capn Ted. Over 100 overs unbeaten and to end in that way...58 on the board though and Amy in so an embarrassment avoided at the very least. In all reality a substantial score left with Eds dismissal as no one was likely to stick around with Amy. A couple of top juniors from Spofforth - both left armers of promise in Warwick and particularly Lawson. Also a really good spell from Megan. Sunny was playing out Lawsons last over when he got a wider one. As a opener (which technically he was for the day) I'm not sure the team needed Sunny to launch himself at this tempter, especially hitting uphill into the wind with two stationed in the deep. What would Sir Geoffrey have done? Probably have smashed it further with his mothers rolling pin? A 'leave' would have been better than the running catch on the boundary edge at chest height that father Lawson took for Tom. Good catch mind. Any way 'houses were still clipping along at 5 an over and had 88 on the board. Enter Captn Kenyon who tucked in to a double wicket maiden. Andy D had looked reasonably secure until Nigel got one back in at him. Chris kept his record going - bowled for a duck. Thankfully Amy batted beautifully. Kept the score ticking, but a compulsive hooker? (if you'll pardon the expression) Not sure what happened with the square leg umpire but the finger went up after the wicket was broken down the leg side. Amy started trooping off only for Nigel and his lads to sportingly call her back. I don't think anyone thought she was out except the chap in the coat (who will remain nameless, captain). Ken in at six to provide some solidity before getting a wide one and miscuing to mid-off. Andy Wilson helped get the total above 120, before the G-unit came in. Batted like Boyks and never in danger, even started shielding Amy from the bowling. Regretably Amy fell sort of a deserved half century when she chased one and Abraham took a great catch in the tips of the gloves. Tea taken at 141 all out and something to bowl at? Unfortunately, Spofforth had a serious batsman in Ward and who never looked in trouble, apart from trying to score too quickly. Scored the first 37 runs, Abraham getting off the mark in the ninth over. At 58, Andy Durrance strangled Abraham down the legside of Ed's mix of seam up but mostly offspin. Ward on 66 became Ed's second victim. He could have coasted to a ton but fell in the eighteeth over with the score on 87. Glasshouses were marginally in front in their innings but the game was not finely poised as Ed and Amy were close to ending their spells. A deserved wicket for Amy before a bit of bowling coaching for Chris and a Berty Bassetts assortment from Sunny. Three overs and four different bowling styles, non of which were effective. An enjoyable if fruitless day out at Spofforth. A really nice club and a very great addition to the Nidderdale league. They've done well, next year Division 1 for the firsts and the juniors will be that bit more exp
